About Organic Products

Demand for certified Organic products are increasing worldwide and has huge export potential. In general, produce grown under a system of agriculture without the use of Synthetic/Inorganic inputs with an environmentally and socially responsible approach can be eligible to be certified as organic. Organic production is not input driven and is gown with the nature. Organic farming practices enables in preserving the reproductive and regenerative capacity of the soil, good plant nutrition, and produces nutritious food rich in vitality which has resistance to diseases. Certification opportunities are for producers, processors, distributors and other handlers of food, fiber and personal care products.

Organic certification is for

Food processors and handlers can get organic certified to process/handle the organic food. At production end, individual or group of farmers can get certified who are doing:

  • Crop production,

  • Livestock Poultry and Products

  • Beekeeping / Apiculture

  • Aquaculture Production

NPOP (India)

The Government of India has implemented the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP) and is governed by Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). Under NPOP program, organic certification standards are framed as National Standards for Organic Production (NSOP). Large-scale farmers and groups of small farmers can take up organic farming to get organic certification for their produce.

Equivalency for Exports:

NSOP standard Program has been recognised by European Commission and Switzerland for unprocessed plant products as equivalent to their country standards. Similarly, USDA has recognised NPOP conformity assessment procedures of accreditation as equivalent to that of US. With these recognitions, Indian organic products duly certified by the accredited certification bodies of India are accepted by the importing countries.

European regulations for Organic

The European Commission has passed regulations 834/2007, 889/2008 and 1235/2008 relative to organic farming in the European Union. These regulations cover:

  • Processed and unprocessed plant products, farm animals and their products intended for human consumption

  • Other unprocessed plant products

  • Processed and unprocessed plants and nutritional supplements designed for cattle or aquaculture

Various certification bodies have developed standards to meet the requirements. 

NOP (USA)

NOP one of the most comprehensive and demanding certification systems in the USA. It was developed to ensure absolute commitment to Organic Certification qualifications as established by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The USDA’s National Organic Program (NOP) provides certification opportunities to producers, processors, distributors and other handlers of organic products. The standard defines acceptable practices, lists substances approved or prohibited from use. NOP also describes record-keeping requirements for the production, handling and with guidelines for marketing and labelling as organic products.

To meet NOP certification criteria, the proposed components must:

  • Comply with Management Practices defined in the standard

  • Organic Production or Handling System Plan shall be prepared and implemented

  • Annual certification review is mandatory for maintaining the certification.

  • Products shall be labelled in an appropriate manner

  • Relevant records associated shall be maintained for a minimum period of 5 years

 

Equivalency for Export

Canada, all EU and worldwide countries recognised and accepted the USDA NOP standards.
