About PEFC
The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) is an international non-profit NGO dedicated for recognising and promoting Sustainable Forest Management (SFM). It is done through independent third-party certification to ensure sustainable use of forest resources through. PEFC works by endorsing national forest certification systems developed through multi-stakeholder processes and tailored to local priorities and conditions. Pursuing these objectives, PEFC developed two standards, i.e. i) a Sustainable Forest Management Standard and ii) a Chain of Custody Certification Standard.
PEFC Sustainable Forest Management certification (SFM)
PEFC’ Sustainable Forest Management certification (SFM) works by endorsing national forest certification systems/schemes which are developed inconsulation with multi-stakeholder processes and customised to context. This recognises operations that maintain a forest’s ecological, social and economic values.
PEFC Chain of Custody certification (CoC)
PEFC Chain of Custody certification (CoC) refers to close monitoring of each step of the supply chain from forest to customer. PEFC Due Diligence System (DDS) minimizes the risk that timber comes from illegal harvesting and enables companies to demonstrate alignment with regulatory requirements (e.g. EUTR). The PEFC DDS is an integral part of PEFC Chain of Custody certification.
PEFC CoC certification is available to all companies that process or sell forest products, including sawmills, secondary manufacturers, brokers, traders, printers, and paper merchants.
